Data corruption is the damage of information due to various hardware or software problems. Once a file is corrupted, it will no longer work properly, so an application will not start or shall give errors, a text file will be partially or completely unreadable, an archive will be impossible to open and unpack, etc. Silent data corruption is the process of information getting harmed without any identification by the system or an admin, which makes it a serious problem for hosting servers as failures are very likely to occur on larger in size hard disk drives where large volumes of information are located. What makes the latter unique is that it employs checksums, or digital identifiers, to verify the integrity of each file. When you upload content to your account, it will be kept on a couple of redundant drives working in a RAID i.e. the files shall be the same across all disk drives. All of the copies of a specific file will have the same checksum on all hard disks and ZFS will compare the checksums of the duplicates in real time, and if it discovers a mismatch, that would indicate that one of the copies is damaged, it'll swap that file with a healthy copy from one of the other drives. Even if there is a sudden power loss, the data on the servers won't get corrupted and there won't be any need for a time-consuming system check that other file systems perform following some malfunction, prolonging the time needed for the server to go back online. ZFS is the only file system which can truly protect your content from silent data corruption.
